Credit limit calculation

icc Search

The ICC credit limit formula is linked to a company score by a percentage weighting which is then automatically applied to a calculated average of balance sheet and cash flow values. The higher the score, the higher the percentage applied. These weightings benefit from the clear discrimination of the score between good and bad companies. There are some companies with no credit limit. These companies will have scored below 15, or alternatively all score components from the balance sheet and cashflow will be negative.

Credit limit period

The credit limit should be regarded as a yardstick for the overall level of acceptable credit, or alternatively, the maximum amount of credit to be extended to an applicant at any one time

How ICC built the scoring model

icc Search

ICC set out to develop a risk scoring model which would take into account the strongest influencing criteria on company performance and reflect the size and business activities of any company. Large samples of historical data were extracted from the database to analyse two types of companies - those which had become involuntarily insolvent and those companies which had continued to trade.

Some 400 distinct characteristics, including over ten years' financial data, were modelled to identify patterns and trends. It was clearly demonstrated that smaller companies, (those with a turnover of less than £1 million - especially those filing modified accounts), exhibited different performance characteristics to larger companies, (those companies with a turnover above £1 million). Ratios were compared across and within industry sectors, and the impact of both county court judgements and audit qualifications were also assessed.

The strongest criteria were then re-evaluated and tested against further random samples. A robust set of components were then identified, and selected as the basis of the new score model.
