I am on PAYE, and yet I always seem to have under-paid or over-paid tax by the end of the tax year. I thought PAYE was supposed to take care of all of this?

The key to the PAYE system is the tax code, which for many people is based entirely on the personal and married couple's allowances. However, if you receive benefits in kind, for example, or have any special allowances, your tax code will probably contain estimates of these. To minimise fluctuations in under/overpayments of tax it is important for you to (1) send us every Notice of Coding you receive, because the Revenue does not always issue copies to us, and (2) inform us promptly of any change in your circumstances.
