Focus on "security measures"

Security measures which might be considered for a hairdressing business include:

  • a burglar alarm system - available from around £450 including installation
  • security shutters - from around £1000 (check whether Local Authority or insurance company require certain specifications)

For the safe storage and transport of cash and other valuables:

  • a safe - from around £350 depending on the grade required; insurance policies may specify a certain grade
  • cash carrying cases, with alarms - from £80 to £200

In addition, devices exist to deter opportunist thieves at the point of sale:

  • "Counter Cache", a secure box for storing notes below the till - around £100
  • "Protectatill", a screen over the till opening to deter snatches - around £70

It is worth contacting the local Crime Prevention Officer, who will be able to advise on security matters and offer a free "Commercial Security Survey".
